Headless finance for ads means the money side of advertising has no dashboard of its own. Cards, charges, and limits are exposed as tools an AI agent can call, in the same place it already reads your ad performance.

**Through the Flyweel MCP, an agent in ChatGPT, Claude, or your terminal reads ad performance, Pipedrive deals, and the card charges behind them in one connection, so you scale on real spend, claim back overcharges, and freeze a card in seconds.**

Rolling out now Card tools reach every Flyweel account over the coming week. This is a look at what they make possible.

## What Is Headless Finance for Ads?[Link to this section](#what-is-headless-finance-for-ads)

**Headless finance for ads is ad spend control delivered as agent tools instead of screens.** The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard for connecting AI applications to external systems [[1]](#cite-1). When the cards that pay for ads sit behind an MCP server, any compatible AI client can read them and act on them.

That matters because ad spend and the card paying for it normally live in different places. Checking that a platform charged what it reported means exporting from the card portal, exporting from Ads Manager, and matching the two by hand in a spreadsheet. Most teams do it once a month, late, or not at all.

The [Flyweel MCP](/mcp) already connects an agent to Google, Meta, and TikTok Ads, and to [Pipedrive](/integrations/pipedrive) for deals and revenue. Over the coming week, it also connects the same agent to your Flyweel[1](#home-fn-1) cards and their charges. One question can cover the ad charge, the campaign it bought, and the deal it won.

## What an AI Agent Can Do Through the Flyweel MCP[Link to this section](#what-an-ai-agent-can-do-through-the-flyweel-mcp)

**An agent can list cards, search card transactions, read ad performance, and freeze or unfreeze a card, all from one connection.** These are the tools it calls:

| Tool | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| `list_cards` | Lists the organization’s cards and the card account behind them |
| `list_card_transactions` | Searches transactions and returns totals across every match, not one page |
| `freeze_card` | Freezes one card. Every charge is declined until it is unfrozen |
| `unfreeze_card` | Lets a frozen card charge again |
| `query_metrics` | Returns spend and performance by channel, account, campaign, and date, including each campaign’s destination URL. With Pipedrive connected, it adds pipeline, win rate, deal velocity, and attributed revenue |
| `list_ad_accounts` | Lists the connected ad accounts |

Each card is linked to the ad account it pays for. When you ask about “the card paying for this account”, the agent looks up that link. It does not guess from a nickname or a merchant name.

Beyond freezing, an owner or admin can ask the agent to issue a card, change a card limit, or cancel a card. A freeze is reversible and nothing is lost. A cancellation is permanent, so the agent should confirm it with you first.

Setup takes a few minutes in ChatGPT, Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Codex, or Cline. The steps are in the [MCP setup guide](/docs/mcp/setup). If the card tools are not in your connection yet, they will appear as the rollout reaches your account.

## What Data the Agent Sees[Link to this section](#what-data-the-agent-sees)

**The agent reads cards, the card account, every transaction, and per-currency totals, with a freshness stamp on each reply.**

- **Card:** nickname (for example “Meta card”), cardholder name, last 4 digits, status (active, inactive, frozen, or canceled), and spend restrictions.

- **Account:** status, current limit, current balance, and when it was last synced and reconciled.

- **Transaction:** amount and currency, the foreign amount when charged in another currency, merchant name, category and location, status (settled, pending, declined, or voided), decline reason, dispute status, date, and the card’s nickname and last 4.

- **Totals per currency:** settled spend, pending spend, declined amount and count, repayments, and everything else, such as voided charges.

Spend is never mixed with repayments or declined charges. A total that blends them looks tidy and answers nothing.

The agent reads Flyweel’s ledger, not the card provider live. The ledger updates on every provider event and is re-checked every 30 minutes. Every reply says how fresh the data is, so a number that is 20 minutes old is labeled as 20 minutes old.

## Scaling Decisions on Real Card Spend, Not Reported Spend[Link to this section](#scaling-decisions-on-real-card-spend-not-reported-spend)

**Because the same connection holds your ad platforms, your CRM, and your cards, an agent can judge performance against the money that actually left.** No export, no second tool, no spreadsheet join. This is the half of headless finance that grows the account.

**True cost per result.** Platform-reported spend can leave out tax and currency conversion. Ask for cost per lead or return on ad spend worked out on settled card spend, and you see what each result really cost.

**Cost per won deal.** Leads are not revenue. With Pipedrive connected, the agent sets settled card spend against the deals each campaign won, giving cost per closed deal and revenue per dollar charged. A campaign with cheap leads and no wins shows up at once.

**Payback against the sales cycle.** Deal velocity tells you how long a campaign’s spend takes to turn into won revenue. Read next to the card balance, it shows whether you can keep funding a slow-closing campaign until its deals land.

**Headroom to scale.** A winning campaign is only useful if the card behind it can carry a bigger budget. The agent compares the card limit and current balance with recent spend pace, then tells you how many days the current budget, or a higher one, can run.

**Where the next dollar goes.** The agent ranks channels and campaigns by performance next to what each card paid. The channel with the best reported return and the channel with the best return on cash charged are not always the same one.

**Stalls before they happen.** A declined charge on a card funding your best campaign is an emergency. The agent reads the decline reason and pending charges, then checks which campaigns on that platform are still running.

**Currency cost.** When a platform bills in another currency, the agent has both the foreign amount and the amount charged. The gap is a real cost that platform reporting does not show.

**Acting on the answer.** If the numbers support it, raise the card limit or issue a card for a new ad account in the same conversation. The analysis and the action stay in one thread.

That is the loop: ad charge, to deal, to cash, read in one place. Flyweel cards are for US businesses, as [debit cards](/debit-cards) drawing on a loaded balance or through [Flyweel Capital](/performance-capital), with terms built around your sales cycle. The reporting platform and the agent work globally.

## How to Reconcile Card Charges Against Reported Ad Spend[Link to this section](#how-to-reconcile-card-charges-against-reported-ad-spend)

**To reconcile ad spend, compare settled charges on the card linked to an ad account with the platform’s reported spend over the same dates, and judge the match by the month, not the day.**

Take one question: “Does what my Meta card was charged last month line up with what Meta says I spent?” The agent finds the card, takes settled spend from that card’s transactions, and compares it with Meta spend from `query_metrics` for the same dates.

The two will drift by a few days. Meta charges you each time your ad costs reach a billing threshold, so one charge can cover several days of delivery, and a charge can land after the ads have stopped [[2]](#cite-2). Google Ads works in a similar way, charging at a payment threshold or on the first of the month [[3]](#cite-3). Monthly totals should match closely. Individual days will not.

| If the numbers differ | Check first | Why it matters |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Reported spend is above card charges | Pending charges and spend not yet billed | Spend already delivered will still be charged |
| Card charges are above reported spend | Earlier spend, tax, or a charge from another period | A charge may cover days outside your date range |
| Charged amount differs from the platform figure | Currency conversion on foreign charges | The conversion is a cost the platform does not report |
| A charge has no matching spend at all | Duplicate charges or a charge after a pause | This is the kind of gap worth disputing |

The same check extends past Flyweel. Give your local agent an export of platform invoices as a CSV or xlsx file, and it matches charges to invoices by amount and date and flags anything unmatched. Connect an accounting MCP such as Xero or QuickBooks, and it compares card charges with booked ad expenses for the month. For the manual version of this work, see our guide to [reconciling ad invoices at month-end](/blog/reconciling-attributing-and-managing-invoice-chaos).

## Turning Overcharges Into Refund Requests, Without Leaving Your AI Tool[Link to this section](#turning-overcharges-into-refund-requests-without-leaving-your-ai-tool)

**A reconciliation is more than a report. It is the evidence behind a refund request, and an agent can draft that request in the same conversation.**

When the agent finds charges with no matching reported spend, it does three things:

1. **Isolates the amount.** It separates charges that timing, tax, or currency conversion explain from charges that nothing explains, such as a duplicate or a charge after a campaign was paused.

2. **Builds the evidence.** It lists each charge with its date, amount, merchant name, and the card’s last 4, next to the platform’s reported spend for the same account and dates.

3. **Drafts the request.** It writes the refund or billing dispute request in plain language, ready to send to the ad platform’s billing support.

You do this where you already work: ChatGPT, Claude Desktop, or a terminal or IDE agent. Nobody opens a card portal or builds a spreadsheet.

Be clear about the boundary. The agent builds the request and the evidence. You submit it, and the ad platform decides. Not every gap is an overcharge, which is why step one matters. Once a charge is disputed with the card issuer, its dispute status is readable from the same connection, so the agent can tell you where each one stands.

The payoff is direct. Spend you can prove was charged in error is spend you can ask to have returned, and most teams never look.

## Freezing a Card When an Ad Account Is Hijacked[Link to this section](#freezing-a-card-when-an-ad-account-is-hijacked)

**When an ad account is hijacked, the attacker can lock you out of Ads Manager, but not out of the card.** The card is the quickest lever left, and finding and freezing it by hand is a scramble. An agent does it in one message.

A typical exchange: “Spend on this account jumped overnight. Show me the new campaigns, and if I don’t recognize them, freeze the card on that account.” The agent lists the new campaigns and their destination URLs from `query_metrics`. If they send traffic to a website that is not yours, it freezes the card linked to that account. Every other card, and every other campaign, keeps running.

Later: “Unfreeze it, we’re back in.”

A freeze has limits. It blocks later charges. It does not pause the ads, remove a rogue admin, or erase spend already delivered and not yet billed. Recover the account through the ad platform and dispute the charges with the card issuer. Our guide to [Meta ad account hacks](/blog/meta-ad-account-hackers) covers that recovery, and why one card per ad account makes a freeze safe to use.

## Guardrails: What the Agent Cannot See or Do[Link to this section](#guardrails-what-the-agent-cannot-see-or-do)

**Card tools are limited to owners and admins, scoped to one organization, and never expose the details needed to spend on a card.**

- **Owner or admin only.** Other roles get a clear reply telling them to ask an owner or admin.

- **Scoped to your organization.** A user who belongs to several organizations picks which one the agent works in.

- **Never exposed:** the full card number, the CVV, the cardholder’s phone and address, identity and business verification data, and linked bank accounts.

- **Reversible by default.** A freeze undoes with an unfreeze. Cancelling a card is the one permanent action, so treat it as a decision, not a reflex.

Run the agent with the same care as any teammate who holds admin access. Ask it to state what it is about to do before it changes a card, and check the card status afterward.

## Prompts to Try[Link to this section](#prompts-to-try)

**These prompts work with the Flyweel MCP connected. Swap in your own card nicknames, platforms, and dates.**

For growth:

> Which campaign has the best cost per lead on what the card actually paid, and how much limit is left to scale it?

> Which card is paying for Google, and how much went through it this quarter against Google’s reported spend?

> Rank my channels by return on settled card spend for the last 30 days.

> Which campaigns won deals in Pipedrive last quarter, and what did each won deal cost on what the card was charged?

For control:

> Does what my Meta card was charged last month line up with what Meta says I spent?

> Any declined charges this week? Why were they declined, and is a campaign at risk of stopping?

> Find charges on my Meta card with no matching reported spend last quarter, and draft a refund request with the evidence.

For protection:

> Check whether any of my Meta campaigns now send traffic to a website that isn’t mine, and if so freeze the card paying for that account.

> Freeze the Meta card.

With your own files or other MCPs:

> Reconcile my Flyweel card charges against this spreadsheet of Meta invoices.

> Compare my card charges with my accounting tool’s ad expenses for September.

## Where Headless Finance Goes Next[Link to this section](#where-headless-finance-goes-next)

**The direction is finance work that runs without anyone opening a tab.** Once money and performance sit behind the same tools, the questions above stop being things you remember to ask.

A scheduled agent can run the reconciliation every morning and message you only when a charge has no match. It can watch headroom on the cards behind your best campaigns and ask for a limit change before a decline, with you approving it. It can prepare the month-end match against your accounting tool so the close starts from a finished draft.

None of that needs a new dashboard. It needs the money and the ads in one connection, a clear set of guardrails, and an owner who approves the actions that matter.

### Frequently Asked Questions

### What is headless finance for ads?

Headless finance for ads is finance without a dashboard. The cards, charges, and limits that pay for advertising are exposed as tools an AI agent can call, next to the ad platform data. You ask a question in ChatGPT, Claude, or a terminal, and the agent reads the money and the performance together.

### Can an AI agent freeze a card through the Flyweel MCP?

Yes. An owner or admin can ask the agent to freeze one card, and every charge on it is declined until it is unfrozen. A freeze is reversible and nothing is lost. The same connection can also issue a card, change a limit, or cancel a card. Cancelling is permanent.

### Can I measure ad performance against what my card was actually charged?

Yes. The agent takes settled spend from the card linked to an ad account and sets it against the results the platform reports for the same dates. That gives cost per lead and return on ad spend based on money that left, including tax and currency conversion the platform total can leave out.

### Can the agent connect card spend to closed deals?

Yes, when Pipedrive is connected in Flyweel. The same query that returns ad performance also returns pipeline, win rate, deal velocity, and revenue attributed to each campaign. Set that against settled spend on the linked card and you get cost per won deal and revenue per dollar charged.

### How do I know how much room I have to scale a campaign?

Ask the agent to compare the card limit and current balance with the campaign's recent spend pace. It reads pending charges too, so it can tell you how many days the current budget, or a higher one, can run before the card reaches its limit.

### Can an AI agent help me get refunds for ad overcharges?

It can build the request. The agent compares settled card charges with platform-reported spend, isolates the amount that does not line up, and drafts a refund request with the charges, dates, and amounts attached. You submit it to the ad platform, and the platform decides the outcome.

### Does freezing a card stop a hijacked ad account?

It stops new charges on that card. It does not pause the ads, remove the attacker, or erase spend already delivered and not yet billed. Freeze the card first, then recover the account through the ad platform and dispute charges with the card issuer.

### What can the agent not see?

The full card number, the CVV, the cardholder's phone and address, identity and business verification data, and linked bank accounts are never exposed. Card tools work only for owners and admins, and only inside the organization the user belongs to.
